I’ve had a lot of fun today trying to learn this song, The Gwiyomi song, or Kiyomi song is a K-pop single by South Korean singer Hari and was released on February 18, 2013.
The first time I saw it was when I was watching We Got Married. Julian Kang did it when they went on a group honeymoon. It’s kind of cute and funny when a tall, tough looking guy does it.
What is gwiyomi? well, I’m definitely not fluent in Korean, so maybe someone else can chime in, but as far as I know, “gwiyomi” is just a word that means cutie, while aegyo usually refers to a whole set of cute and childlike mannerisms. Gwiyomi (the English translation is “cutie player”) is just another way to express aegyo.
It was inspired by a gesture from K-pop idol rapper Jung Il Hoon called Gwiyomi Player, which became an Internet meme in October 2012 following it’s appearance on the variety show, BToB MTV DiaryMany. The gesture has inspired many Asian netizens to upload their own versions onto the internet.
In a South Korean variety show’s segment ‘Aegyo (cuteness) Battle” many Kpop stars including Miss A’s Suzy, Girls’ Generation’s Soo Young, Infinite’s Sung Kyu, SISTAR’s Soyou and more showed their own version of the Gwiyomi song gaining great attention by people.
